Position Summary
Position Title: Science Laboratory Coordinator (10-month position)
Reporting To : Chair, Science and Mathematics Department

Position Summary :
Under the direction of the Chair of the Science Department perform responsible work in the planning and setting up of teaching lab materials for biology, chemistry and physics labs; maintain laboratories, stockrooms and instrument rooms in an orderly, safe, and efficient manner; ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations related to laboratory safety, including maintaining training records, coordinating waste disposal, and spill and exposure response; provide work direction and guidance to student assistants; assist in semester schedule planning; and teach laboratories as assigned. This is an in-person position.

Required Qualifications

Education:
A Bachelor's degree in the assigned lab area and knowledge of laboratory techniques, preferably in biology, animal anatomy and physiology, and general chemistry, are required. Master's degree and two years of practical experience in a science laboratory preferred.

Experience:
Other desirable qualities include experience with undergraduate-level education and familiarity with diverse student demographics; familiarity with laboratory procedures, facilities oversight and equipment maintenance; experience in preparation of materials for general chemistry, organic chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology & Anatomy and Physiology labs.

  • Principles, practices, procedures, and equipment of a variety of science labs.
  • Current regulations and laws pertaining to regulated substances and chemical wastes.
  • Care, keeping, propagation, and disposal of living material and biological specimens.
  • Safety regulations involving the area of specialty.
  • Principles and practices of providing work direction and training.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
  • Technical aspects of the field of specialty.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience ,and courtesy.
  • Proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste and chemicals.
  • Basic purchasing procedures and budget management.
  • Proper operation of computer terminals and applicable software.

  • Prepare or oversee student preparation for each lab procedure, demonstration and lab exams.
  • Operate lab equipment.
  • Oversee the removal of lab set-ups and return to proper areas or dispose of appropriately.
  • Provide information and assistance to students and staff.
  • Assure the care and security of assigned equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Maintain learning equipment in proper working order.
  • Issue and receive equipment and supplies.
  • Plan and organize work.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Assign and review the work of others.


Working Conditions:
This is an in-person 10-month position, with some evening and weekend hours required.

Benefits:
Full-time employees are eligible to receive medical, dental, and vision benefits. Full-Time employees can earn between 18-23 paid time off a year. The employer covers tuition remission after 90 days of employment and covers 100 % (employees are responsible for books and technology fees). The college is committed to work-life balance and has a summer schedule from June through August. We currently have 14 paid holidays, including a winter break. You will have the opportunity to participate in our retirement plan from day one, and after one year of employment, the college will contribute depending on your service years.
