What are the primary job responsibilities?
The Mentor Teacher plays a pivotal role in supporting and guiding new educators during their initial years of teaching. This position will enhance teacher retention, promote professional growth, and improve student achievement by providing structured mentorship aligned with Michigan's Mentoring and Induction Standards.


In addition to the requirements of a teacher, key responsibilities for the Mentor Teacher include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in one 3-hour virtual professional learning session in early August (date will be shared by June 1)
  • Participate in two additional mentor training sessions over the school year.
  • Utilize provided resources, including readings and scope and sequence, to guide the mentoring experience for new teachers.
  • Provide guidance, support, and feedback to assigned new teachers (mentees) throughout their first three years of teaching.
  • Facilitate monthly check-in meetings to discuss instructional strategies, classroom management, and professional development goals.
  • Maintain up-to-date meeting logs for each mentee.
  • Provide constructive, confidential feedback to promote reflective practice.
  • Collaborate with school administrators and instructional coaches to ensure cohesive support for new teachers.
  • Maintain open and confidential communication channels with mentees to build trust and encourage professional growth.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in education or equivalent
  • Hold a highly-qualified certification in Michigan for at least 3 years.
  • Minimum of five years of teaching experience; 5 years at a CEN school preferred.
  • Minimum of three consecutive years of demonstrated high-quality teaching, as evidenced by data
  • Commitment to the belief that all students can learn and succeed
  • Possess the desire and willingness to develop one's own skill set
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain constructive group relationships.
